Families in Holland at the end of de last century, how very different they all seem. Almost always they laugh or smile at the camera. This was different in the portraits of around 1900 (portrait of my grandparents). Photography was a serious matter. But.... my grandmother smiles in a photograph of her and her family in 1900.

My portraits are taken mostly with an old but excellent Rolleicord, they are friends, relatives. The photographs are taken in the years 1990 - 2000

'Family in Holland' can give a very different picture sometimes: some marry young, others in their thirties or even forties, when the first ones are already grandmother and grandfather.

They get one or two children, sometimes three and rarely four. This was much different in the first half of the twentieth century when a family of six was common and a family of ten or even twelve happened regularly in Catholic and orthodox Protestant society.

In the country where I live since 2000, Portugal, I will continue to take portraits of friends, neighbours and those who like to have a portrait of themselves and their children.
